The Importance of Dog Training

Why is training your dog properly so important?
Your dog loves you and wants to do exactly what you want; just as soon as he finds out what it is you want!
The purpose of training with your dog is actually to allow you to communicate with your pet. Of course it is a much more fun and rewarding relationship for you if your dog is well trained and obedient and your dog will be much happier too. A well trained dog is much more of a pleasure to exercise with when you know that you can have your pet return to you no matter what the distractions are, but thats not all, here are just a few reasons to train your dog.
*Bonding with Your Dog*
The time you spend training your dog strengthens the bond between you as you come to understand them and they learn to understand you, this bond lasts for life so the time invested in training your puppy when young will pay you back handsomely for years to come.
*Public Safety*
Believe it or not some people are afraid of dogs and some just dont like them, I know its hard to believe but its true! Having a well behaved, obedient dog in public is much less stressful than having a pet that is overexcited and liable to scare some passers by, its not unheard of for litigation to follow such an encounter. If your dog is under your control on or off the lead then you can be sure of peoples admiration for your pet and for your handling
*Dog Meetings*
If you train your dog well then when you meet other dogs in public your dog will be much more likely to socialize and have fun rather than be aggressive. In addition you will be able to retrieve your pet from these play sessions without having to wrestle them onto the lead and drag them away. This has the added bonus that you can socialize with other dog owners whilst your dogs play!
*Family Fun*
It is important, particularly in families with children that your dog can play safely and that your children are able to control him or her as well. Once you have a dog that has responded to training its a simple task to then train the family in controlling your pet. Much safe family fun will follow.
*Behaviour Problems*
A dog is a pack animal and as such you must assert your dominance over your pet or she will become the top dog in her mind your training becomes much more difficult. By training with your dog from an early age you will assert your role as the pack leader and this stops a whole host of behavioural problems from developing, combined with some great training tips you will have your puppy trained and well behaved in no time. Asserting dominance does not in any way include violence towards your pet, hitting, kicking or other physical chastisement of your dog will lead to a unruly and uncontrollable dog, if you feel the need to do this, please buy a guide or see a professional trainer for help.

Being able to train your dog on your own is one of the most rewarding experiences any dog owner can have. Not only will you get your dog to be the "good boy" (or girl) you want, but you will also strengthen the bond between you and your pooch.
Before starting any dog training program, keep in mind that you want to be a teacher to your dog. You don't want to be a crazy dictator but you also need to remember that you are the one in charge. You are teaching your pup to be a better behaved dog and be the pooch that everyone admires!
One of the most common questions we receive is whether you should train your dog on your own or hire a professional trainer. Thankfully for us it's an easy question - you should! It's a great way to improve your relationship for the long run.
Effective dog training requires a battleplan. I included a link at the bottom of this article so you can get a full dog-training program you can use at home, but for now here are a few tips to keep in mind when starting to work with your pooch.
Before you start any training session, make sure your dog is in the proper mindset. Take him or her for a walk so that your dog can go to the washroom. You also don't want to try to train them right after they have had a meal. Just like humans dogs can get sleepy after they have filled their belly.
By doing this you are eliminating a few potentials distractions that could stand in the way of training.
It's also a good idea to have a quick "play time" directly before your training. It's a great way to relax your dog and make him comfortable with you.
And as you might have expected, doggie treats are a part of any training program! Your dog loves to be rewarded when he or she does something right. Don't go overboard and give 3 dozen treats each time - save them for when your pooch has truly earned it so he or she knows what they did right.
You may find that your dog runs off at some point in a session. Don't chase after him. Just use an authoritative voice and call him back. When you have his attention reissue the command you were working on and keep moving forward.
There are going to be times where it just looks like your pooch is absolutely clueless about what you are expecting of them. This is normal and you can't let yourself get annoyed or mad at them. Instead, find ways to better communicate with your dog so you get the most out of your future training sessions.
There are times you are going to have to take him and physically demonstrate what you want him to do. Just keep at it and I guarantee over time he will start to understand you better and better.
